Picture:File Cases of female students and pupils being caught with men in guest houses and residential areas have gone up in Busia County. Gender and human rights groups are now calling on the police and school administrators to intervene as the trend is a threat to girl child education in the county.
In March, six schoolgirls were caught with men, five in lodgings and one in a residential house in controversial circumstances. The first incident took place in Nambale town where a middle aged man, who was said to be a Board of Management teacher at a school in Bungoma County, was found in a lodging house with a Form One girl from Mungore.
After paying the boda-boda motor cycle taxis , she hid behind the lodge and changed to civilian clothes then entered the lodge. Nambale Police Station officers acted fast and rescued the schoolgirl. Chakol Division administration police Inspector Albert Wamalwa said they were tipped by members of the public about two primary school girls who were spotted at a funeral during the night in full school uniform before they moved to a lodge with two men.
A shocked father who had spent the night looking for his daughter was told that she had been arrested. It was until this morning when I was called that my daughter had been arrested alongside another pupil with some men in a lodging.
The suspect was arrested and later taken to Busia police station and arraigned in court where he was charged with the offence but was later released on bond. However, he was later rearrested for impregnating the two primary school girls who have since delivered. These cases and others that have not been reported to the authorities are cause of concern over the rights of the girl-child and is worrying education crusaders in the county.
